The coast of Lastovo are not very indented and bluffed,and the sea surrounding the island is very deep and rich with fish. That is why the sea around Lastovo is among the most suitable once for fishing. The traces of life on the island date back to distant past and rather early the island was in the area of Greek merchant’s interests. During the Roman period, the harbor has developed on the island, and the island itself was named Augusta insula, the Imperial Island. In the Middle Ages, Lastovo had its own autonomy for centuries, until it was incorporated in The Republic of Dubrovnik in the 13th century. Lastovo shared same destiny as Dubrovnik Republic until its collapse. After World War II, the island was under the authority of Italy and following World War II it was returned to Croatia and served as the strong base for the navy.
